মেরুদন্ড ছাড়া যেমন কোন জীবের আস্তিত্ব কল্পনা করা যায় না, অনুরূপভাবে tense ছাড়াও ইংরেজি ভাষার কথা কল্পনা করা যায় না । আমরা যা কিছুই লিখি বা বলি না কেন; সব কিছুই কিন্তু tense এর সাহায্যে করি । আর tense সম্পর্কে জানা মানে ইংরেজি ভাষার নিয়ম-কানন সম্পর্কে ৭৫% জানা । আবার tense ও verb চেনা মানে ৯০% ইংরেজি ভাষা জানা । তাই এখানে তোমাদেরকে tense এর সংজ্ঞা, চেনার উপায় ও গঠন প্রণালী সম্পর্কে একটা সম্যক ধারণা দিতে চেষ্টা করছি ।
Tense কাকে বলে?

Tense: Tense শব্দটি Latin word ‘tempus’ হতে নেওয়া হয়েছে, যার অর্থ কাল বা সময়। verb এর কাজ সম্পন্ন হওয়ার সময়কে Tense বা কাল বলে।
অর্থাৎ-Tense = Verb
Tense কত প্রকার?
Classification: Tense প্রধাণত: ৩ প্রকার। যেমন :-
1. Present tense
2. Past tense
3. Future tense
প্রত্যেক প্রকার Tense এর ৪ টি করে form বা রূপ আছে। যেমন:-

Continuous forms----6 [perfect continuous tense গুলো continuous tense এর আওতায় পড়েছে বিধায় continuous form মোট ৬ টি। ]

অতএব, tense এর মোট ১২ টি form আছে।
Meanings:
Indefinite--- সাধারণ
Continuous-- ঘটমান
Perfect ---- পুরাঘটিত
Perfect continuous ---- পুরাঘটিত ঘটমান
Note: Continuous tense এ verb এর base form/present form এর সাথে ing যোগ করতে হয়।
Perfect tense এ verb এর past participle form হয়।
Indefinite tense এ verb এর present form, past form হয়।

Indefinite tense গুলোর গঠন প্রণালী (V121)
1. Present indefinite tense:
a) Sub + P.V1+ বাকী অংশ. They play football.
b) Sub + have/ has +বাকী অংশ. Barsha has a pet cat.
c) Sub + am/is/are + বাকী অংশ. The boys are in the classroom.
2. Past indefinite tense:
a) Sub + P.V2 + বাকী অংশ.
They played football.
b) Sub + had + বাকী অংশ.
She had a pet cat.
c) Sub + was/were + বাকী অংশ.
The boys were in the classroom.
3. Future indefinite tense: Sub + shall/ will + P.V1 + বাকী অংশ.
They will play football.
Continuous tense গুলোর গঠন প্রণালী (V1 + ing)
4. Present continuous: Sub + am/is/are + P.V1ing + বাকী অংশ.
They are playing football.
5. Past continuous: Sub + was/ were +P.V1ing + বাকী অংশ.
They were playing football.
6. Future continuous: Sub + shall be/ will be + P.V1ing + বাকী অংশ.

7. Present perfect: Sub + have/ has + P.V3 + বাকী অংশ.
They have played football.
8. Past perfect:
a) Sub + had + P.V3 + বাকী অংশ.
They had played football.
b) Past perfect + before + past indefinite.
They had played football before the rain started.
c) Past indefinite + after + past perfect.
The rain started after they had played football.
9. Future perfect:
a) Sub + shall have/ will have + P.V3 + বাকী অংশ.
They will have played football.
b) Future perfect + before + future/present indefinite.
They will have played football before the rain starts.

10. Present perfect continuous: Sub + have been/ has been + P.V1ing + বাকী অংশ + since/for + time word.
They have been playing football for 2 hours.
11. Past perfect continuous:
a) Sub + had been + P.V + ing + বাকী অংশ + for + time word.
They had been playing football for 2 hours.
b) Past perfect continuous + before + past indefinite.
They had been playing football for 2 hours before the rain started.
12. Future Perfect continuous:
a) Sub + shall have been/ will have been + P.V1ing + বাকী অংশ + for + time word.
They will have been browsing the internet in the lab to solve a problem for two hours.
b) Future perfect continuous + before + present indefinite.
They will have been playing football for 2 hours before the rain starts.
